Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

I want my students to engage more in the Spanish classroom by making materials more accessible and relevant to their lives. These literature resources will allow my students to critically engage with the material and comprehension of Spanish culture and overall language.

It is my goal to foster a classroom community that teaches students the importance of understanding, respecting, and working with diverse groups of people.

Through my teaching style of using cultural and antiracist literacy, students are engaging in heavy current political climate and issues, all in the target Spanish language! The more I can engage them in culture, the more they can feel empowered to understand and learn about other Latinx cultures. Being able to have these resources on hand helps me foster a community that is accepting and overall engaging in Spanish knowledge.

My students are engaged, critical thinkers and leaders who are prepared for the rigors of higher education. Our school's main mission focuses on maturing the artistic abilities of our students so that they are ready to pursue their artistic talents and goals for the future. All of our students come from low-economic backgrounds and receive free and reduced lunches. The majority of our students are African-American and Hispanic, residing predominantly in the south and west sides of Chicago respectfully. Even still, at our school, our students focus on not only graduating from high school but also demonstrating persistence and grit through their after-school artistic pursuits and commitments. Our school aims to see our students use their artistic talents through various means and venues including pursuing college, but that begins in our classrooms every day.

It is imperative for our students to make their experiences in our classrooms relatable to their own lives and help them make connections to foster more open and caring environments.
