My Students
A book with no words? That sounds like a contradiction in terms, especially when you're in Kindergarten learning to read! However, there is so much more to literacy than reading the words on a page.
I work with a wonderful group of Kindergarten students.
They are enthusiastic, energetic and eager to learn. They live in a diverse urban area and come to school with a variety of experiences, needs and abilities. I would like to ensure that every student can experience quality literature regardless of their ability to read words.
My Project
Group sets of wordless books will give me the opportunity to teach reading skills and strategies without being bogged down by text. Therefore I am asking for 6 copies of 6 different titles. With these books I can group students in various ways. My students will be encouraged by their ability to "read" the story fluently using their own words and imagination. They will look to the pictures to identify main idea and details, setting, characters and plot.
In groups the books will encourage discussion while developing comprehension skills. They will be introduced to new vocabulary and be allowed to discuss without being limited by simple text. Because the students will be focusing on the illustrations, they will have the opportunity to use their inference skills, looking for clues to explain. They will learn about story structure and sequencing. The books will also be used to inspire creative writing activities.
These books will allow students to develop their literacy skills regardless of their ability to read.
They will become accustomed to discussing literature, a skill they will use for the rest of their lives.
