This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
My class is composed of 22 young minds who possess such incredible eagerness and excitement for learning. My students come from low socio-economical backgrounds and have limited English language proficiency. Their background knowledge, thus, is often limited as they have not had meaningful learning experiences of the world around them. Thus, they are often curious and amazed by the simplest of things, such as using a magnifying glass to observe ladybugs in a clear container.
Their knowledge-hungry minds demand a classroom environment where curiosity, creativity, and self-expression are the ground rules, and where failure is expected as a step towards achieving goals.
These lovely 4-year-old children are simply not afraid of making mistakes, for we have become accustomed to celebrating "failures," as failures or mistakes indicate they have learned and are ready to move on towards success- whatever the task may be.
My Project
These activities will allow me to extend my STEM lessons by allowing students to engage in individual discoveries during Center Time.
The minds of my young students are naturally drawn to exploring and trying new things and I must ensure it remains that way always!
Thus, with these activities, they will be able to guide their own learning as they apply basic concepts and expand on them while creating new "aha moments" along the way.
The ultimate goal is to achieve a desire to continue life-long exploration, discovery, following up on their wonderings, and developing an innate love for STEM!
