This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
My 6th graders are AMAZING!! However, "AMAZING" only goes so far when funding is low and resources are limited. Having first generation iPads won't help if we are trying to keep up with 21st century learning. My students need iPad 2's to support them academically while they continue to be "AMAZING"!
My students attend school in an urban school district located in South Central Los Angeles.
My 6th grade students come to school everyday waiting to learn new and exciting information. They are kind, hardworking, and persevere through the man of the situations they live through on a daily basis. Unfortunately, poverty in our area is a constant issue that we face. Currently, more than 80 percent of the students attending our school qualify for a free or reduced lunch. However, the students are eager to learn new things, intrigued by technology including the information they can obtain from it, and most importantly, its varied uses.
My Project
With Common Core, it is critical that students engage in a variety of activities that challenge and extend their thinking. Currently, my class of 28 students have to access to 4 second generation iPads. Three additional iPads will provide greater access to technology use. Students will work in small groups to design digital stories they can share with the class. This will greatly enhance their reading and wiring skills. My students will create a collection of their own narratives within genres of literary and informational works including poetry and raps as well as post them online. They will learn various ways to researching, discovering different types of informational sources and distinguishing between fact and opinion. It will also be easier for my students to pen-pal the other students in Spain. Having access to more iPads will allow my students to develop skills using iMovie and video apps to create Science Presentations for Science Night detailing projects for their families.
The donation of iPads will give them greater access to technology within the school day.
It would provide an extension to my students learning and would motivate my students to apply skills they have learned using technology. It will also motivate students to use the 21st Century Learning skills of collaboration and communication in a fun and interactive way. My students will develop more socially, academically, an emotionally in their interactions with each other and learning.
