My Students

The NUMBER ONE complaint from teachers of math at the elementary level is, "Students don't know their math facts!!!" Well, I am determined that when my students go to 4th grade, their new teacher will NOT have that complaint regarding my current students!

I teach 22 active, wonderful, creative, eager to learn third graders.

They are so smart and so curious -- the perfect combination for optimal learning! My classroom is made up of students who receive learning support services through special education, students who speak English as their second language, students who are in our gifted program, and every student in between! It is challenging to teach such a wide range of abilities, but each student is a unique individual, and it is my job to reach them all!

My Project

The reason math facts are so difficult for young students to master is that they are a largely abstract concept. Remember when you were a kid and all you did was use flash cards over and over and OVER? Yeah, well, that doesn't really work to instill a deep mathematical understanding of numbers and how they work together. In recent years, teachers have used base-ten blocks, ten-frames, and other tools in an attempt to make numbers more concrete for their learners. These tools are fine, but I have found something that will work even BETTER -- Rekenreks! I know, weird name. But these tools are AMAZING. They look like abaci (or abacuses - both work as the plural of abacus, I looked it up!) but are simply formatted for students to use as tools to add and subtract numbers in a way that helps to form mathematical understanding. I am requesting 14 student Rekenreks, a teacher demo-model, and a guidebook of activities to use with my students.

Forming true mathematical understanding in the early years of a child's education is so vitally important -- I can't stress that enough!

Math is a HUGE subject area, and if students do not understand numbers and how they work, they are going to struggle throughout their educational career. We just cannot allow that to happen! Thank you so much for joining me in my journey to nurture and cultivate a new crop of mathematicians!
