This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
My 6th grade EL class is very special to me. As a second year teacher, I have learned to develop a sixth sense that helps me connect with them not only academically but also by creating a loving classroom environment. My students are not only struggling to learn the English language, but fight battles outside school in order to get ahead. Most of the students, have their parents in Mexico, and at times see them only once a week. It is hard to cross the border every Monday morning, and stay motivated to do their very best. However, these students have the best attitude towards their education regardless of their hurdles.
My sixth graders are there for each other and show compassion towards each other while they miss loved ones back home.
The students see each other as a "Familia" and encourage each other inside the classroom and outside in the playground. They truly value their education and know the price their parents are paying to come to the states for a chance of the American Dream.
My Project
This trip to Arizona State University would mean the world to my students. My students would participate in a variety of high-tech labs, interactive environments and engaging exhibits, in which they would never have a chance to do on their own. This program focuses on STEM, which helps build academics as well as spark an interest in careers that deal with science. These group of students deserve a chance to explore their options, and this is one way to start. Not only will they explore science but be exposed to a different world than they are used to seeing.
Stepping foot into a University, is not only a stepping stone for their education, but a dream that they all visualize!
Many of these students only know two places, Mexico and their small town of Yuma, Arizona. Taking this 3-hour trip may not seem like a long distance, but for them it means leaving their hardships behind for one day and embarking on this adventure that will last a lifetime in their minds and hearts.
