My Project
Since I becoming a teacher, I have been on a quest to find the most effective, research based programs for teaching children to read. I taught first grade for many years where phonics was a huge part of our day. Now, as a fourth grade teacher, phonics is not part of my core curriculum even though I have many students reading well below grade level. Programs structured for children to learn to read as 6 and 7 year olds are great, but my students are being presented with complex texts every day that need more support with.
Secret stories is a program that will help me unlock phonics concepts for fourth graders who haven't mastered them thus far.
To support students who are well below grade level, a different approach is necessary. Secret stories will help me present my fourth grades with all of the phonics concepts they'll encounter in their daily work and give them access to the books they desperately want to read.
