Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Some of my students go to a home without heat, electricity or food. My students are struggling on a daily basis and have very different priorities. School supplies are not a top priority. Because of this, my students usually have ZERO supplies. I want to CHANGE that this year; no more struggle.

We are a part of the Philadelphia School District.

We are a Title I school. "Title I, formerly known as Chapter 1, is part of the Elementary and Secondary Education Act of 1965, and is the foundation of the federal commitment to closing the achievement gap between low-income and other students." We have an enrollment of a little over 800 students. Of those 800 students, 97.6% of these students are economically disadvantaged. In this neighborhood, majority of our student's parents are just trying to make ends meet financially. Many of these parents are unable to pay for their utilities, let alone send their child to school with paper and copybooks. As a teacher, I am given a $100 dollar allotment for the school year. I am allowed to use this for any supplies that I would need to ensure that learning can take place. Unfortunately, I always end up spending this allotment on supplies for my students. They do not have what they need to be successful learners, through no fault of their own.

My Project

With this donation, I will be able to provide my students with the copies of the workbooks they will not be receiving. I will be able to use the mathematics and reading programs more effectively. My students will be able to receive homework, important messages and school news because I will have the paper to do so. It will be a new world for us with this donation because it will take away the fear of having to do without. Having these supplies will change their lives on a daily basis. My students will not have to worry about not having a pencil. They won't have to go home at night without a pencil to do their homework. They won't have to be afraid to make mistakes, because they will have an eraser to fix it. They won't be afraid to run out of room in their journal, because they will know that there is another one they can use. They will be able to fill the pages with their stories and ideas, without the fear of having to stop to save room. Such small things will change things for us.

These donations will help me prove to my students, my children, that someone else cares about them.

People they have never met and will never meet, care about their well-being and their academic success. In 2012, the School District of Philadelphia gave the PSSAs, our state wide testing. Across the entire State of Pennsylvania, only 0.05% of Economically Disadvantaged students were considered an "Advanced" writer and only 47.3% were considered "proficient". With your help, we can change this.
