I am the intervention specialist in a second grade full inclusion classroom. Not only do I co-teach in the classroom, I also manage the IEP's and goals of the 8 students with disabilities. The school system I teach in has more than half of its students as low-income students and more often than not most of my students come to school without even their most basic needs being met. Even with these barriers, this does not stop my amazing students from coming to school eager and anxious to learn and be the best they can be!
My students' disabilities range from mild to intensive, so I strive to make sure all of my students learn, no matter their ability level, in this setting.
There is a lot of differentiated teaching and learning going on throughout the day to make sure I am meeting the needs of all of the students. This typically means I need to make sure I have a variety of resources at my fingertips to be able to provide my students with everything they need to be able to learn. My goal is to set them up to be independent, contributing members to society in the future!
My Project
I currently service students at a very small table that not everyone can fit around comfortably. I have five wobble stools that the students love to sit on, but we often find ourselves squished together with little room to work. The flex-space desks would provide space for all of my students and would allow us to move around the room as needed. The general education teacher I work with and myself have a goal to provide every student in our class with a flex-space desk. We pride ourselves in our ability to meet the needs of so many mixed ability students in one room. In doing so, we love to give our students the opportunity to work together.
These flex-space desks will be a great start to providing our students with access to more collaborative learning.
Students will be able to work together in groups and can easily move throughout the room. We would also be able to separate the students during tests with the flex-tables.
These desks would provide amazing opportunities for my students to learn. My hope is that by having a more organized, comfortable space, students can do their best learning in our inclusion classroom!
