Help me give my students desks that they can use while learning from home. At this time, many of my students are working on couches, beds or sitting on the floor.
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
As a special education teacher in a low-income/high poverty urban school district, I know my students are faced with challenges they are too young for both in and out of the classroom. Despite the many challenges they face, they come to my door each morning with a smile on their face and are greeted with an even bigger smile by myself and the instructional aides.
Many of our students receive a free breakfast and lunch and are being raised in single-parent households or by extended family.
Even when at school, the circumstances at home can stay with them and can cause them anxiety during the school day. All these things may hinder their progress in school.
In our school, we strive to balance these challenges with positive experiences and try everything we can to help them succeed. We continually offer positive feedback and strive to emphasize that their education is indeed the key to a successful future. Our school is full of dedicated staff who care for and love each student.
My Project
Many of my students do not have a desk. There can be several children and adults in the home working. We are striving to give them the resources they need to be successful.
These desks are light enough to move around as needed yet provide a solid working space.
Students who are currently sitting in their bed or on a couch cannot easily complete their work. they are having more neck and backaches at a time in their life when posture is most important. These desks can also be transferred back to the classroom and used as additional seating for hallway collaborative work and taken to other parts of the school easily, such as the courtyard, and provide a solid workspace.
