My Students

This year is a little bit different than my 15 years teaching in the past. This 2021-2022 school year, I will be back in the building, after being away for the past year and a half. I am working on setting up my classroom to keep kids distanced and safe. I want my students to have the same experience learning as they would in front of me in a classroom without a pandemic. My remote classroom will consist of about 30 students, from a Title I, mixed-income, diverse neighborhood- learning from home, who have not had a normal school experience in over a year and a half.

Many of these students have parents who are first responders or essential workers, and distance learning, and this pandemic was very hard for them academically and socially.

Some of them who have parents that must go to work will be cared for by grandparents or babysitters. Of these 32 students, many of their kindergarten experiences were cut short in March 2020, when NYC schools went remote. They come from diverse backgrounds. Many of my students are English Language Learners (ELL) and many of them have IEPs to meet their needs.

My Project

The way the class is arranged due to Covid leaves students to lack the social-emotional closeness they used to have in a classroom.

This year, I want to give my students the opportunity to earn Desk Pets, little friends that can help them get through the day, keep them motivated, and express their creativity- from 3 feet apart.

Students will be able to earn desk pets, items for their pet's daily needs, and this will help keep them on track. They can trade with friends, and do things to earn more items for their pets.

I think having a pet, in general, helps children learn and grow.

These little plastic erasers will serve as the emotional support that many students will need this year.
