This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Whenever I tell people I teach middle school, the first reaction is usually something like "How can you stand it?" or "Wow, that must be tough!" with the occasional "Oh, God bless you!" thrown in.

I used to feel the same way until I met my first group of seventh graders- They are the best!

Yes, sometimes the hormones go into overdrive, but my students are hysterically funny, have a great desire to learn and are old enough to understand and discuss interesting topics.

In my classroom, I strive to create a space where kids can see themselves in the texts we read, build a love of books, and challenge themselves to become the best they can be! While my students don't all share the same culture, most share the same economic status.

All of our students receive free breakfast and lunch. Despite challenges that they face, my students come to school willing and eager to learn. They have great plans, hopes, and dreams for the future. They are funny and bright, and I consider myself lucky to be their teacher.

My Project

In our modern world, having a reliable computer is less of a want are more of a need. In the current pandemic, this is more true than ever, since at any moment, classroom could be moved to a hybrid or fully online mode of learning for the safety of students, staff, and families in our district. My lessons will need to be ready to go in a digital format at a moment's notice, with slideshows and screen captures taking the place of mini-lessons and video-chats taking the place of small group instruction. Unfortunately, this summer, my trusty laptop has given up the ghost. It saw me through graduate school, many years of lesson planning and research, and even did it's best to keep me going during the spring session, but it is no longer able to meet the demands I have placed on it.

A new laptop would allow me to access and share the most updated programs and lessons with my students- hooked up to the projector in class, and through our Google Classroom if we go digital again.

A new laptop will allow me to run engaging multimedia, interactive, and collaborative activities such as Kahoot, GimKit, Answer Garden, and VoiceThread that students can access via their own phones or technology, and share their answers with their peers without sharing their germs. A laptop would also allow me to easily work on lessons, slideshows and activities for my students at home in a safer environment, and then transport back to school, rather than spending additional time working at the outdated desktop in the classroom, risking additional exposure to germs. If we go digital, a new laptop will keep up to the usage demands that active teaching calls for so that kids keep learning. Thank you for your support!
