Designing Dreams: Creativity & Critical Thinking Through Visual Art!

My students need essential art materials like paper, paint, pencils, and markers in order to explore and excel in their drawing and design classes.

My Students

I teach at a Title I high school in Washington, DC. My school has been a part of our community for decades but is in the midst of several major changes, including a much-needed building renovation and shifts in administration. This past year, we took on the title of “Global Studies Campus,” a term which reflects our focus on developing global competencies in our students, as well as our increasingly diverse student body.

While many of my students deal with hardships outside of school - challenges related to housing, family relations, food, and money - all of them are bright, capable, and resilient.

My students represent a range of backgrounds and ethnicities. Some have have lived in Washington, DC for their whole life, while others just immigrated to the United States from countries in Africa and Latin America. Each one contributes vibrant personality, creative energy, and a powerful love of learning that makes our school an incredible place to call home.

My Project

I teach Drawing and Design I, classes in which my students are challenged to explore and contribute to our immediate and global communities through the creative process. Because I teach multiple sections of each course, our studio is in desperate need of a restock in essential art materials for planning and producing 2-dimensional works. The paper and board products will be used both for the research and brainstorming stage of art making, as well as final pieces. Drawing students will be experimenting with the diverse properties of pencil and pastel on a variety of surfaces, while Design students will be using markers, paint pens, and X-Acto knives to engage with layout principles and graphic design content. This technical instruction is embedded in units focused on themes like individual and community identity, the use of text and typography in visual art, and color theory as it relates to visual culture.

My students have meaningful stories and complex ideas to share through their artwork.

By processing and representing their world through visual art, my students expand their creative energy, deepen their critical thinking skills, and develop global competencies. But without access to basic, quality supplies for the coming school year, my classes will fail to provide my students with the outlet to do so.

My students deserve to enter school in the fall with high expectations for the work they will make over the next several months. With your help, I can offer my students the supplies they need to reach their creative goals and benefit fully from the academic and life enrichment that art provides them.
