Design Your Own Mini Invention

Help me give my students a 3D printer to design their own mini invention!

FULLY FUNDED! Dr. Obert's classroom raised $396

My Project

I’m always seeking ways to bring creativity, critical thinking, and real-world problem-solving into my students’ learning experiences. One of the most engaging and impactful ways I’ve found to do this is through hands-on 3D design projects. With your support, I’d like to implement a project that allows students to identify small everyday problems and design practical solutions—bringing their ideas to life through 3D printing.

Project Overview:

In this project, students will take on the role of young inventors. They'll begin by identifying common frustrations in their daily lives; things like tangled cords, lost bookmarks, or unsealed snack bags. After brainstorming, they'll sketch potential solutions, then transform their ideas into 3D models using Tinkercad, a free, browser-based design program ideal for beginners.

Once their models are complete, we’ll use a 3D printer to create physical prototypes. Students will then test their inventions, reflect on what works (or doesn’t), and refine their designs if needed. Finally, they’ll present their projects to peers, sharing their design process, product purpose, and problem-solving journey. To showcase their work, students will also create a slideshow or mini-poster highlighting their steps—from initial sketch to final product.

Why This Matters:

This project fosters skills that extend far beyond the classroom. Students will practice:

Creative and critical thinking by identifying real-world problems and designing practical solutions.

Digital literacy and 3D modeling, valuable skills in today's technology-driven world.

Persistence and iteration, learning that failure is part of the innovation process.

Communication and presentation as they explain and advocate for their design ideas.
