Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My students are constantly exploring! They are eager, ready to learn, and are constantly looking for new avenues to express themselves. In this unit on design thinking, students will go through the process a designer would --including inspiration, sketching, painting, models, and building!

Our school is a free, public college preparatory charter school serving students in grades K-8.

We are a charter school and much of our funding is limited. I see all grade levels, K-6 once a week, and 7-8 four days a week (students choose their electives). We have an incredible group of students. It has truly been a pleasure to teach them! They are so curious, active, and ready to make art. I want to give them additional opportunities to utilize their curiosities throughout the school day.

My Project

My students will use the supplies requested during a unit on design and architecture. They will begin by sketching out ideas for building their own chair. They will use watercolor paper and vibrant liquid watercolors, which will help them to visualize and illustrate their ideas. The palettes will allow them to explore mixing colors, being in total control of the product. The second step will be to use the air-dry clay to create a small model of their chair to scale. They will finally make a mock-up in cardboard, wrapped in colored construction paper, and displayed for their peers. We are taking a field trip to the Museum of Contemporary Art in February, and the pop-art furniture exhibit will be an amazing way for students to make connections between initial drawings, design, building, and real-world application. I can't wait to see what they build!

My students will understand Design Thinking, from visualizing to initial sketches, scaled builds, and eventually a product.

We will dissect the process, discussing opportunities for Design Thinking and taking a project through all of its developmental stages. The real world connection will be invaluable to their learning and understanding.
