My Students
I teach at a diverse school in the metro Atlanta area. Some of the school population consists of students from other countries from around the world. Many of these students struggle with learning English. At my school, we strive to give them opportunities to challenge themselves. We also have oral, hard-of-hearing students from throughout the entire county.
Being the media specialist gives me the opportunity to reach out to all of our students within the school with our new makerspace.
I am in the process of creating a makerspace environment where students can come in on their own or as a class to design, develop, and create their ideas.
Our school is a STEAM school so they have project-based learning (PBL) activities per grade level. Students may want to come into the makerspace to continue to develop projects that they are working on in class or they may have their own projects.
Having a makerspace will allow students to become engaged in what they want to learn. Instead of being teacher led, it is all up to the student.
My Project
The materials that I am requesting will help students with their design challenges. Being able to build with the wood allows them to be creative. The saws are so that they cut exactly what they envision in their mind.
For those students that prefer to work with textiles, the Olfa rotary cutter and blade sharper will allow them to easily cut the fabric.
This will give them more time to spend on the creative side of working with fabrics.
Along with these supplies, a storage locker is needed in order to keep some of the items locked up and safe when not in use.
More than half of students from low‑income households
