My students need funds to go on a customized mural arts tour of the Barrio de Oro, a predominantly latino neighborhood in our city. This is for a Spanish 4 course.

My Students
Public art is one of the most powerful forms of storytelling. We walk past them every day and get a glimpse of who the people are in the communities and what makes the communities unique. The goal is for my students to explore their communities and design meaningful murals for them.
We are a small, project-based, urban high school.
My Spanish 4 students are passionate about learning the Spanish language. They are hungry to USE the language in our community and apply their knowledge to real-life tasks. As is the case with many schools, our arts budget has been drastically cut. I want my students to see that the arts are alive and well around our city and for them to participate in creating more art.
My Project
My Spanish 4 students will be exploring the storytelling power of murals. We will debate and discuss essential questions like: What is art? Is graffiti art? What role does public art play in our city? How do murals reveal the identity, history and essence of a community? For their final projects, they will design murals which tell the story of their communities and will identify the space where their murals would be placed.
In order to further my students' understanding of the role of public art, I would like for us to go on a customized mural arts tour of the Barrio de Oro (a largely latino neighborhood of our city). We will use this tour as a source of inspiration for their murals while learning about a very important sector of our city and the people who live there. I firmly believe that the deeper our understanding is of our community, the more respect we will have for those who live there. In this way, public art is a vehicle for creating positive relationships.
Public art plays a role in nurturing healthy communities.
Our wonderful city has been plagued with racial tensions that have escalated into violence. I want my Spanish 4 students to understand that murals can bring people together, make bold statements, and tell powerful stories. The mural arts tour of our Barrio de Oro will help them examine and analyze public art they see everyday in a new way. It will serve to inspire their own exploration and reflection about their own communities.
