This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Our school is an elementary school that services students from TK to 5th grade. We are located in the middle of a diverse and dense urban population. My 3rd and 4th graders are enrolled in a Spanish Bilingual Program that maintains and enhances their native language while supporting their growth in the English language. We have a 50/50 model in which half of the day is taught in English and the other half in Spanish.

Our school is located in the heart of Los Angeles a few miles from downtown Los Angeles where bilingualism and diversity are celebrated.

We are a Title One school that serves low income families from different cultural backgrounds. We have a large immigrant population and we are a safe zone campus.

My Project

Many of my students are first generation children of immigrants or are immigrants themselves. We represent different Latin American countries like Mexico, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras and Nicaragua. Coming to a new country, learning a new language and feeling the pressure to assimilate to a new way living is a difficult task. This experience is particularly difficult on a child who may lack the tools to express themselves. My newcomers come eager to learn regardless of the many obstacles previously noted. My students born in the US often live in fear because of the harsh reality of our current political climate. They fear the possible separation from their immediate families. With all these obstacles in their present they still come to school everyday prioritizing their education. We foster a supportive environment by providing them with a bilingual education with a global focus. With that global focus we expose our students to other children around the world that are experiencing similar situations.

Every person has a story to tell and children when given a platform can create wonderful narratives.

This year I'd like to give my students a space in which they can tell their story, their families' stories or the stories of other immigrant children around the world. With the notebooks, I'd like students to create meaningful stories of their experience in a new country, of their journey to a new country and their hopes and dreams for the future. Through this process students will feel supported, will be given a voice and will also be practicing their reading, writing, listening and speaking skills to support their English language development. The printer and other materials will help us eventually publish these beautiful stories to share with our parents and community.
