My Students
One of the goals of my government and economics classes is to help students hone the skills needed to be effective, participatory citizens. Speaking and listening skills are a critical component to this, and one of the ways to enhance these skills is through generationally relevant curriculum.
My students are high school seniors getting ready to embark on a new life journey as adults.
They become very interested in their government course content as they start to see how it directly impacts their lives outside of school. They are very good at sharing their opinions on various subjects, but in order to be informed citizens, they must hone their listening and compromising skills as well.
My Project
The deliberation curriculum I'm asking for helps students develop these communication skills. In order for students to effectively deliberate, they must seek concrete evidence to support their views, as well as listen to other perspectives to empathize and understand the larger picture.
Unlike a debate, which has clear winners and losers, deliberations offer students an opportunity to compromise in order to seek out the best outcome for everyone, not just themselves. These skills are critical to citizens who live in a democratic republic such as the United States, which asks its citizens to participate in government decisions.
Your support of this project is not simply for new curriculum for a government class.
It is supporting effective speaking and listening, empathy-building, and compromise-reaching, which will make the next generations of citizens more informed and less apathetic in order to bring positive change to our communities and country.
