This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Imagine being given a test in a foreign language in which you only know what 2/3 of the words mean and you are expected to pass. Could you pass?

The pressure of state testing is increasing as the rigor of the test is increasing.

However, just because the demand to learn more increases does not mean that the ability to learn a second language becomes any easier or faster. Over 98% of the students in my classes are socio-economically challenged and English Language Learners. The students have truly developed a passion for the written word. They enjoy reading books regardless of their reading level. They use the limited resources we do have in class to figure out complex books. My students are not afraid to work for success!

My Project

As of this year, the state of Texas will be allowing students to utilize a dictionary to assist them with understanding the test. This is a huge leap forward for English Language Learners. Students in my classroom can tell you what figurative language is and why an author would employ specific techniques. However, not all of them would be able to tell you the answers to these things in someone else's words. Providing students with dictionaries will allow them to figure out what the questions and answer choices mean not only on state tests, but on daily assignments, as well. Once the students are able to define and translate what is written, they will be able to succeed in any setting.

My students really do want to succeed.

They work and study hard. Please help them help themselves succeed. No student should feel bad because they have the right answer, but cannot figure out how to say it in someone else's words. Thank you for your support!
