Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Many of my students had never finished a novel until this year. They were lucky to receive donations from the wonderful donors here on this website. But there's a problem. Now that they've started to engage in reading, how can our school keep the reading train going?

Our students live in a community with parents and guardians who are caring and dedicated to helping their children go to college.

However, many of our students will be the first to graduate high school in their families. Many are English learners, and we have a high population of students with special needs. With all of these challenges, our students are still focused on their dreams. They come to school wearing college sweatshirts, write in their journals about how they will spend the next four years preparing for college, and more. In order to support these students, they need to have access to books that can spark their interest and improve their reading and writing skills. This library could do just that.

My Project

In order to continue empowering our students with reading, our school will be doing a reading incentive program. It will involve both individual and group competition, and the program will be based on students meeting their reading goals, not just reading more than their peers. In order to support this, the library materials I have chosen are varied. I have included graphic novels, high interest stories, popular ninth grade texts, novels that address the issues of our students with learning disabilities, and more.

As a teacher, it is my job to expose students to the different cultures, worlds, and information available in order to help them develop into the creative, engaged thinkers of tomorrow.

In order to do this, I need a sufficient classroom library to appeal to all varieties of learners.
