My Students

In our class we use reading and writing not only to free our minds, but to create a more equitable and just society.

Our school is classified as Title I and is also the only majority black high school in the state.

We have come from nearly being closed, to outpacing the entire district in graduation rate growth over the last five years. We are also a middle college program, and are ramping our 9th and 10th graders up to take college level classes their junior year. Our students are creative, passionate, and understand the value of education. They are also justice minded, and are focused on creating a more equitable society in their lifetime.

My Project

HP Lovecraft is a well loved writer, and weird/horror fiction is a fun and high interest genre for students. HP Lovecraft was also influenced by colonial perspectives, Eugenics, and his own fear of, basically, everything. His work, then, depicts people of color as stereotypical and beast-like. On top of that, the genre is dominated by white male characters and authors. The Ballad of Black Tom takes Lovecraft's universe and infuses it with rounded black characters. It creates space for people of color to work in, think in, and be inspired in. It also is a fictional place that reflects modern issues like police brutality and "othering." In terms of culturally relevant curriculum, it is important that we do not present the same roles and narratives for people of color. Targets and freedom fighters are important to the historical narrative, but a more robust representation is crucial. This book decolonizes a genre and provides those alternate roles.

What they will actually be doing is reading the story and comparing it to the original work of Lovecraft.

Then they will be writing their own weird fiction featuring traditionally marginalized characters and reflecting modern issues, decolonizing the genre.
