This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
My school serves children from kindergarten through eighth grade. About 92% of the students in the school live at or below the poverty line. We are a full-service, inclusion school which means we teach all students with behavioral, social-emotional, or learning needs. My students work hard and are excited to learn.
Every day the morning announcements end with "What can you do today to make our school more kind, caring, and inclusive?"
My classroom consists of 20 students. Seven of my students have Individual Education Plans (IEP) for a range of needs. More than half of my students are bilingual, and English is not their primary language.
My Project
This year our school is highly focused on improving reading skills across our school. We have been using many books during small group instruction, but we are now looking to enhance our phonics instruction using specific decodable texts.
These decodable texts are structured and will fit with our daily phonics lessons.
It allows us to teach a skill and for students to practice that skill in a text.
Students will be using these texts on a daily basis and the texts will be used across the third grade students in both classrooms.
