My Students
I believe every child deserves the opportunity for an excellent education, and I am proud to partner with my school, other educators, families, and community leaders to strive toward this goal. I teach in a high poverty school zone in which 100% of our students receive free breakfast and lunch. These amazing students need additional support because most of them come from low-income single family households of which many have little to no support or resources. Despite some of the challenges they face in and around their environment, every year my students come to school excited, full of life, and eager to learn.
As the 2016 and 2019 Teacher of the Year as well as an alumni of Metro Atlanta Teach for America, I choose to continue to significantly impact the life trajectories of students in our region’s high-need communities.
My Project
As students are learning to read, it is essential they have access to high quality, engaging texts that they can read! These decodable texts from Heggerty provide students with the word practice they need to grow as readers, while also keeping them engaged! They use characters my students are interested in or non-fiction topics they love and customize the text into a format they can read. When we have engaging, appropriately leveled text student motivation increases which results in overall reading success.
The Science of Reading shows that students need decodable text to practice applying the phonics skills they are learning in class.
With these decodable readers, students will feel more confident in their own reading skills and will be more interested in reading on their own! Once my students become independent readers, their world to literacy will be open to endless opportunities. I want to be able to give my students the tools to succeed, and for them to be able to transfer those independent reading skills to the rest of their lives.
