Decodable readers are texts that are controlled for specific phonics patterns (and also include common sight words). The purpose of getting decodable readers for my classroom is to give my students the opportunity to practice the phonics patterns that I am explicitly teaching.
Decodable readers provide an excellent opportunity for in-context practice.
(Research shows that students need to practice phonics patterns and words in isolation, as well as in the context of reading and writing.) The decodable readers allow students to use their letter-sound knowledge to decode words and read. Decodable readers are also especially important for students with specific reading disabilities (like dyslexia). Decodable books are valuable for ALL students!
Decodable readers are absolutely essential when students are first learning to read!
These decodable readers will partner with the Brainspring Orton Gillingham program I am using. Together, they will give my students phonics and also the opportunity to practice those skills and be successful readers.
My students will benefit tremendously from these texts from Teachers Pay Teachers and the Lakeshore store.
