C.S. Lewis once said, "We read to know we are not alone." My students come to kindergarten with a variety of social and educational experiences, as well as varying socio-economic backgrounds. They inspire me each day with their desire to learn! They devour each new book that I introduce, wanting to make a connection to the characters and learn about their world.
My students have a great love for books and desperately want to read them on their own as "real readers."
In an effort to provide the best literacy instruction for each of my students, we need appropriate books for them to read. In kindergarten, we set the stage for the students' literacy with a "reader's workshop" format, which will allow each child to be challenged and supported at their own pace.
This requires many decodable books at their individual level for our students to practice their developing reading skills. My students already understand that books are special and they treasure each new addition to our classroom library.
