My Students
My school is a public school in Chicago where 93% of the students are low income. This year, our primary classrooms are made up of about 20 eager learners.
Our students are considered high-needs and have many stresses compared to the average five to eight-year-olds.
Because of this, I work very hard to make sure the students at our school receive the learning, resources, and exposure they need to surpass what some statistics may say. I am proud of the hard work my students put in each day!
My Project
More and more students are struggling to read each year! The Science of Reading identifies HOW children learn to read and it is nothing new. Phonemic awareness, phonics, fluency, vocabulary, and comprehension should be at the center of all reading instruction. The problem is, not all books and materials are made with the Science of Reading in mind. However, decodable readers are!
Decodable readers can build students’ feelings of success because they reinforce the cumulative nature of early reading development and increase students’ opportunities to practice essential skills with more than just isolated words.
These decodable readers will be the start of building a library of books within my classroom that students can work with in small groups and independently. The books follow a phonetic sequence and will allow even the earliest of readers to be successful independently.
