I am working with my fellow kindergarten teachers and literacy coach in a Brooklyn elementary school. I work with this team the the benefit of approximately 40 students that span across two classes. Our students are curious and eager learners who are excited about the world around them.
My Project
Help the kindergarten teachers and the students they serve revamp their classroom libraries! We want to shift our students' focus away from relying on picture clues and predictable language patterns to decode text. Students will practice decoding sounds they have learned during explicit phonics instruction while reading high interest fiction and non-fiction texts that are developmentally appropriate. Reading decodable texts will help students store letter sounds and word families in their long-term memory. This rapid decoding will allow students to read more fluently and comprehend texts more deeply which will develop their confidence and love of reading!
