My Students
Have you ever wondered what it was like to be a young Navajo enciphering or deciphering secret codes during WWII? Do you honor and respect those who secretly served during this time such as the Tuskeegee Airmen? My students do and they want to try and put themselves in their shoes!
are 5th graders excited about cryptology, WWII, Secret Codes, and trying to solve them all!
They have been learnign to encipher, decipher, problem solve and never give p- just like our military did and continues to do. They all attend a variety of the 11Title 1 public elementary schools in our county, and are bussed to us during the week for additional ps services that thelp them develop a higher level of thinking in all academic areas, through their own independent passions! Problem solving, critical thinking, and hands on experiences are all part of what they participate in each week! These kids are great thinkers and doers!
My Project
involves students practicing Morse code, using the Navajo code that helped us earn victory in WWII, enciphering/deciphering and trying out secret codes they have created themselves! Students will particiapte in a real life learning adventure using walkie talkies by working in cooperative (supervised) groups to travel and hide among the school grounds and ten using "radio" communication to transmit thier secret messages! This will really help students to understand the difficulties of communicating this way, and the importance of making the effort to get it right! It also allows them to work using items they have no previous knowledge of. Our class is hoping that all of thier missions can be accomplished!
Students need hands on opportunities & real life experiences to explore the uses of cryptology in a safe place!
These items & activites add meaning to the lessons. While not in use for this specific project- these walkie talkies can be a tool to keep our children safe! We are in trailers behind the school- w/little communication to each other or the main building. We often are not aware of tornado warnings, or other threats in the community. These walkies will change that for over 700 kid
More than three‑quarters of students from low‑income households
