My students need 30 copies of "Abraham Lincoln Vampire Hunter".
This project expired on March 5, 2011.
Hooray! This project is fully funded
I have students who are just at the age where they are deciding whether they want to be readers or not. All of them enjoy a good story in one form or another, so my challenge is to continuously provide them with literature that will pique their interest and expand their horizons.
We are in California.
Our neighborhood is mostly a Latino community where we have a mix between a steady trickle of new families immigrating to the US, and older residents of the community. Some of whom have sent numerous children to our school over the years. The students receive a warm welcome at our site, even though we constantly face a daunting second language issue. It is acknowledged by all that we have an uphill battle, but obviously we are committed to it and so are the students and families. I am on this site because my students understand the value of education and want their shot at the American dream. Without high interest material though, it is very easy to lose their focus and attention.
One of the sayings I live by is "reading teaches." The activity we will engage in is one that many of them have never been exposed to, namely reading a novel from start to finish. That is the crux of my request. Along the way we will have circle discussions about the themes in the book. We will write essays in response to those themes. Students will choose sections of the book to recreate in dramatic fashion. Lastly, they will have numerous chances to imitate the style of the writer and come up with their own ideas and twists based on what they are reading.
When you choose to get involved in a classroom, you are helping kids, no two ways about it.
This request in particular is important because these novels are a kind of tipping point for kids. When we finish books in class and kids come to me and say, "I used to hate reading, but now I get why it's cool," I know that I am on the right track. My philosophy from the beginning has been that I can teach students through storytelling, as long as I have the right stories and in the right form.
