Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My students are incredible. They are all recent immigrants and refugees from every corner of the world. They come from over 40 countries and speak over 35 languages. They are hardworking, dedicated, supportive, creative and generally wise beyond their years. Most of all, while they have been through so much, their resilience is admirable.

These students bring their whole lives to the classroom and have so much to teach each other and their teachers.

I am often in awe of my students and am inspired by them every single day. Each day with them is a new adventure, one I feel so fortunate to be a part of.

My Project

Every year our students create a literary essay portfolio project that they must present for graduation. In the past books have included more traditional novels, such as To Kill A Mockingbird. While we are fortunate to be able to pick our own books -- and almost always have students choose what they would like to read, the literary essay is a whole class project, the one time they are all reading the same book. We had success with Dear Martin last year with a handful of students and feel it is the right book for this double pandemic time.

Just Mercy is the perfect accompaniment to Dear Martin for those students who want to go deeper into racism, police brutality, and other social (in)justice issues.

With a YA version and the film recently out, Bryan Stevenson's story will be accessible to all my incredible English Language Learners. Although we all come from different parts of the world, the themes in these books are relatable and will hopefully encourage students to look into their own lives and make changes in their own communities.

We have 20 copies of Dear Martin already, so we need an additional 70. And I have no doubt we will have at least half of our students wanting to go deeper with Just Mercy. Thank you so much for your support!
