FULLY FUNDED! Ms. Benham's classroom raised $318
This project is fully funded
Last year, the female faculty at my school recognized something our eighth-grade girls were seriously lacking--sisterhood. Every day we found ourselves worn out after breaking up fights and trying to resolve conflicts among our female students. Though the stereotype is that boys are violent, these girls were just as bad. They did everything in their power to inflict pain, both physical and emotional, on their fellow classmates. It seemed that somewhere along the way, our girls missed some crucial mentoring in how to conduct themselves like ladies.
Thus we started a mentoring group known as "Ladies in Training" in an attempt to establish relationships between the young ladies and older ladies in our school. As big sisters, we aim to instill in the girls a sense of sisterhood, or respect and appreciation among females. The big sisters represent a variety of women in the school. I teach Spanish, one big sister teaches English Language Arts, two are elementary teachers, one is a literacy coach, and one is the pupil secretary. Regardless of the specific role, each big sister fulfills in the school, we are all equally invested in the well-being of our girls. Our ultimate goal is to give the girls healthy ways to deal with stress and conflict so we can all just get along.
Journaling seemed like a great habit to introduce to the girls. For one thing, it's practical. They can do it whenever, wherever, regardless of how impoverished their homes may be. And second, journaling would provide the girls with a confidential place to put their emotions. Many of the little sisters tell us they can feel their anger building up inside, but they don't know what to do with it.
Unfortuately, our school has no budget for journals. And with 99 percent of our students receiving free lunch, it just isn't possible to ask the girls' parents to buy them journals. By purchasing sixteeen journals, you can provide our eighth-grade girls with a way to get their emotions out, instead of letting them boil over and turn into violence.
Thanks in advance for helping these girls grow into the healthy, well-adjusted young ladies they want to be!
