My students need to experience visually and first-hand the tarantulas and arachnids that they read about in their guided non-fiction reading!
FULLY FUNDED! Mrs. Van Manen's classroom raised $204
This project is fully funded
My Students
My students are all deaf, hard of hearing, or have some kind of hearing loss. Each of my students wears hearing aids and/or cochlear implants to help them function in the hearing world. I teach a small class of 11 students who are in the 6th, 7th, and 8th grades.
Despite my students' deafness and hearing losses, they compensate for their delays with determination and a thirst for learning and communication.
They love to read, and I find that using visualization techniques and hands-on learning helps them to best comprehend, and make reading come to life.
My Project
My students are currently reading all about tarantulas in The Tarantula Scientist by Sy Montgomery as part of a new reading curriculum in our school. I would love for them to experience real, live tarantulas and other arachnids at our local nature center, Alley Pond Environmental Center to help their abstract learning come to life.
My students come from low-income families, and may not be able to pay for the $8 ticket fee per student to experience the 2-hour tour.
The tour includes a study of arachnids with a focus on tarantulas. My students will learn what makes this group unique, from physical characteristics to life cycles. They will also recognize and appreciate the important role these amazing animals play in our environment! I think the hands-on, once-in-a-lifetime experience of meeting live tarantulas will add so much more for my students' comprehension and learning.
