This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

I am the lucky teacher of my own self contained Special Education Day class, made up of 4th and 5th grade Deaf and Hard of Hearing (American Sign Language only) students- with additional disabilities, such as Autism, Blindness, CHARGE syndrome, and/or various other language delays. These kiddo's are one of kind, and while I'm exhausted on the daily I put 100% of my heart and soul into helping my students grow into self-sufficient, confident, and intelligent middle-schoolers (eek!). My kids deserve the absolute best, and I intend to do whatever I can to make sure they receive the most high quality, accessible education possible.

While the outside world may not be set up for their success, their classroom SHOULD BE!

The materials in this request are highly needed in my classroom. Overhead lighting is very overstimulating for students with autism, which is why I intend to use a standing lamp instead of harsh classroom lights. In addition, a messy classroom is means for distraction- which is where a vacuum would come in handy. Flexible seating can make a major difference when it comes to engaging my students, which is why I would love to offer them the option of sitting on the carpet with the floor desks during instruction. The weighted vest, as well as the fidget chair bands would be a great resource for my students with sensory needs. The Retail Kiosk iPad Stand would benefit my Deaf-blind student, who is able to use his iPad to zoom-in on various things and in turn would give him greater access to his visual surroundings. The large green rug would be an amazing addition to our classroom library. Lastly, the Rainbow Scratch Paper Notebooks are a fantastic "hidden" occupational therapy activity. as it requires students to utilize fine motor skills.
