Deaf Communication and a Visual Link for ELD Students
My students need sign language books, cards, posters and more to be able to communicate with the deaf students in our classrooms. This also helps them as a link between their first languages and English.

My Students
Most of my students are learning English as their second or third language. For these students sign language can help bridge the gap between the language they know and the language they need to master to flourish in our school.
In addition to the ELD students that I teach I am also the TAG coordinator and I teach students who participate in our academic after school program.
I work with over 60 different students each week. Students range from kindergarten to high school. There are several deaf students in our small district. Students have shown an interest in being able to communicate more effectively with their deaf peers, and an interest in learning a beautiful language.
My Project
Sign language is a skill that could be the link between my students and a future job, or connect them to a friend they couldn't otherwise communicate with. Studies show that Sign language increases brain activity and fills the gap between verbal language. It also increases fine motor skills and links students with their peers. One of the instructors at the College of Professional Studies and Outreach at Gallaudet University recommended "Master ASL" as a guide for K-12 students. It meets the national standards for foreign language learning, and I was able to match it to the Systematic English Language Development Curriculum that I use in my classroom. The set of books I have put on my grant request are the student companions for this program and other resources to begin an ASL library and resource area in my classroom. There will be games, charts, flash cards, movies, and resources for children to practice ASL in many different ways so that different learning styles are all addressed.
These materials will be used by students throughout my district.
I will be using the materials with over fifty students myself each week. Those students will practice and share the information with friends and family, and cause waves of communication in our community. This will open doors for nonverbal and verbal students alike.
