This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Project
We have a shared space at our HS that integrates SIP and CLS. We have decided to create this space with the intention of self-soothing and skill reinforcement. Items such as the gaming chairs would provide a high-value incentive for our Title One school/ SIP/CLS students, and assist in tangible reinforcement for overall skill use which would not only increase fluency but also implementation of appropriate and generalized ways of their getting needs met. The rocking chair and mat would create a safe space for students in both CLS and SIP to self-soothe or de-escalate when overstimulated and provide us teachers the comfort of knowing that our kids are safe.
Snacks added on, are for self-soothing when students need to take mindful moments to just gather themselves; allowing them to focus on the sensory input of the snack, rather than their intrusive thoughts or the environment around them prior to coming to our de-escalation/ reinforcement room.
My goal for this project is to reward students for skill utilization, and to also teach them that mindfulness, breaks and safe-spaces are good ways of finding the calm inside of them to better interpret the world around them. Overall, they can slowly be exposed to tacting what calm feels like, what safety feels like and what mindfulness feels like to make better decisions on how they want to feel when challenged. It also provides them a safe place to go when challenged so that they are no loner engaging in problem behavior and are using skills to get their needs met.
Lastly, my students are special because they are all unique and bring such differentiated joy to my life. Each of them work together to support each other and are learners that participate together and contribute to the culture and community.
