Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
"You can't change who you are, but you can change what you have in your head, you can refresh what you're thinking about, you can put some fresh air in your brain." (Ernesto Bertarelli)
My proposed project will lead students to have brains that are refreshed and will encourage an open mindset.
I teach an enthusiastic group of 2nd graders.
In our school, which is 97% free and reduced-price lunch, the children receive little assistance at home to help them develop their critical thinking skills. During the 2014-2015 school year I began to incorporate "Creative Friday". First, the students were placed in learning teams and given a higher level Blooms question that related to a topic of study for that week. Next, they discussed the question, decided on a response, and used their creative building supplies to design a project that represented their response. Afterwards, the teams would write a debate paragraph proving why their response was superior to their peers. It was remarkable to watch them think critically and formulate responses that were often superior to the ones I had prepared. As I mature in this area of integrating critical thinking and problem solving in my instruction time, I realize that I need more diverse building materials.
My Project
The Wikki Stix, Playstix, Play-Doh, and the wooden building materials will support the students in extending their knowledge and making better connections by designing creative debate projects. Their diversity will be used in a positive manner as they come together in student-led learning teams. The tactile-kinesthetic learners will be able to understand the information better because they will be touching, moving, and being active. The visual learners will see the project taking shape, and the auditory learners will have the opportunity to orally discuss the response. Oral presentation skills will be practiced and improved. The math manipulatives, base ten set, place value coins, and measuring worms, will enhance and bring about concept mastery as well by making use of diverse learning styles.
These young children will develop critical thinking skills that will be a vital part of their success throughout their school years as well as into their chosen careers.
Parenting Science states "students are more likely to master a topic then they are forced to explain it to another person." Encouraging a student to consider another's point of view is an important step toward maturity. Mastery of a topic and improved life skills will lead to an improved classroom environment.
