My Students
As a Title 1 school, my school serves a diverse population of underprivileged students. Approximately 67% of our 700 students (470) receive free or reduced lunch. We have seven families (which impacts appox. 18 students at our school) who are classified as homeless – and that number does not include the 40-50 students who live with grandparents or other extended family members who struggle to care for them. The students in my classroom come to me with an interest in learning, but often not the supplies. As a teacher, I make sure that a child never goes without supplies, even if I must pay for them myself. This project has been written with the hope of taking a little of the financial burden off of next year's Kindergarten parents and ultimately the teachers, like myself, who will be buying the missing items if they are not purchased by the families.
My Project
All Kindergarten students at my school will be required to have Data Notebook binders next year in addition to their Take-Home binders. The Data Notebook binders will stay in the classroom and be assessable to the children at all times. In the Data Notebooks, the children will keep track of their letter and sound recognition, how many sight words they know, what reading level they are on, how high they can count and what numbers they can write. Every child will have their own notebook and will track their progress in it as they become proficient in an area. The content pages are designed with Kindergartners in mind: they are easy to read, easy to complete and they are very encouraging! Students love to document their progress.
There are many advantages to having individual student Data Notebooks, the only disadvantage is asking parents to buy two binders on one supply list.
My project will assist my entire grade level: 6 Kindergarten classes which is approx. 160 students.
More than half of students from low‑income households
