Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
I currently have a group of 20 fabulous Second Graders in a dual Language classroom. They live in a low income, high poverty stricken inner city community in northern New Jersey. My students are faced with several challenges both in and out of the classroom due to their socioeconomic status and their varying linguistic abilities. Despite this, they all come to school everyday ready, willing and excited to learn! They tackle challenges and strive to do their best. They are resilient, respectful, and hardworking students.
My Project
The goal that I have for my students this year is to make them into independent learners. One way to foster independence and have students take accountability for their learning is to provide them with the necessary tools and resources to make them successful. Building independence and making them accountable for their learning is important because they need to develop their own sense of ownership, motivation, and growth mindset.
Data binders are an effective tool to help students track their progress toward their learning goals.
They will be able to record their data and see their progress and/or need to adjust their goals. The data binders are also a great visual for parents and students during parent/student/ teacher conferences.
We are also in need of laminating pouches, toner cartridge, and Velcro dots. The Velcro dots will secure materials to the binders, the laminating pouches will provide longevity for the student data sheets, and the toner cartridge is necessary to print the necessary resources and materials used within the data binders.
All these resources and materials will foster student independence and allow students to take accountability for their learning.
