I teach 9-12th grade math in a small rural high school where poverty and student trauma levels are high. Many of my students come from broken families, and are the first person in their family to go to college. Over the past three years, interruptions in instruction due to COVID-19 have created large mathematical learning ravines for students. I see my students becoming more anxious in regards to testing and less confident academically. Their capacity and desire to be resilient in regards to problem solving has become somewhat diminished. Hands-on activities were also limited due to the contagion of COVID. My students love doing projects and hand-on learning labs, and technology helps them connect mathematical concepts to real-world problems, which motivates them to persist and develop problem solving stamina.
The requested resources would be utilized to purchase a shareable classroom set of Texas Instruments graphing calculators and accessories to gather real-world data.
With the addition of this technology, my math students will be able to mathematically measure motion, temperature, light, sound, pH, and even force. This equipment will help my students bring “math to life” by merging different areas of STEM. They will learn how to develop hypotheses, conduct experiments, analyze data, and formulate conclusions. My students will be able to see how the harmonic motion of a spring can be represented by sinusoidal functions, and how the sound of various musical notes can be recorded and documented mathematically.
Many of the students from our school are financially unable to purchase their own graphing calculators. Our school’s current inventory of graphing calculators are more than 15 years old and on their “last leg”. They can no longer be updated with current operating systems. This minimizes the opportunities for my students to fully appreciate the full immersion of STEM into our
