My students need 2 Vernier LabQuest data collectors.
FULLY FUNDED! Ms. Reeves's classroom raised $868
This project is fully funded
I teach science to K-5 in a large city in Illinois. Our students are low-income; 7 students in my class live in the homeless shelter across the street from the school. 98% of the school qualifies for free breakfast and lunch. This is our 4th year of operation and we are exposing our students to new innovations in technology and science, especially using data collectors (probes, meters and such).
Due to lack of funds and prevalent gang activity, the students in this neighborhood seldom go anywhere, thus limiting their exposure to learning from their environment. Each year I and the 2 other 4th grade teachers take our students on a 3 day, 2-night adventure to a national lake shore. During this field trip, students investigate 5 different ecosystems and take measurements of temperature and pH of soil and water in each.
We need 2 Vernier LabQuests -- a hand-held rugged, waterproof data collector. The students will learn to use this new technology to record temperatures in each of the ecosystems, and after connecting it to a computer be able to graph the data and analyze the differences. The LabQuest will provide needed experience with technology and make field work interesting and data collection accurate.
Our students have such little exposure to what is available in the world. Combining a trip to unique environments with how to use scientific technology will instill the lessons and enhance their journey of discovery. You will make it possible for these wonderful children to get a look at technology that does more than play music or games. Thank you.
