My Students

AMY at JM is a Title I (high needs) desegregation magnet in the Port Richmond neighborhood of Philadelphia. Our students come from all over North and Northeast Philadelphia to attend a school that is diverse, friendly, welcoming, and safe. For many of them, this is radically different than their neighborhood school. AMY is not a charter school, but a format within the School District of Philadelphia.

AMY at JM was ranked 3rd overall out of Philadelphia's 20 Middle Schools, and 1st in its peer group, based on 2015-2016 Department of Education data.

Still, the School District of Philadelphia remains a high needs district with severe budget issues, and AMY students still lack many of the resources utilized by their suburban counterparts. With improvements to instruction like the materials requested here, our science instruction can match the best that any local district or school can offer!

My Project

Last year, through a grant obtained by our principal, we were fortunate to acquire two class sets of Vernier data collection units and probes. However, our end goal is to get six more sets so that they can be used in lab groups.

Inevitably, students learn better when they do the task themselves.

Class sets are great, but group sets are better! The Vernier probes are high quality, affordable, and practical to the lessons and topics we teach every day. The Vernier company is easy to work with and offers great support. The class sets have been a great addition to our science classrooms, but group sets would make our labs even more meaningful to our students!
