This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My scholars are 32 energetic sixth-grade GATE students.

They are a group that is about to embark on a new journey into middle school.

They are a passionate, kind, and resilient bunch that perseveres even through difficult situations. They are eager to learn and have recently found their own voice in an effort to speak up against social injustices.

This year, they have strengthened their technological abilities and are learning to integrate new components of media into presentations and projects. My school has started an arts program that teaches students dance, singing, art, computer programming, and various musical instruments both throughout the day and after school. My scholars are now ready to become more creative with their art skills. While the students are excited to learn the new programming elements, they are held back due to the fact that they don't have the necessary tools to take their progress to the next level.

My Project

I am requesting Dash robot accessories to explore the elements of art as my students strengthen their understanding of art and movement and how it can be created through coding. Dash robots are fun, interactive robots that students can control and code. I am proposing to use these tools to teach my students about different approaches to create art while infusing instruction with 21st century learning skills. Students will create coding that will be programmed into these robots. From there, the Dash robots will navigate according to their code through different areas of a plane coupling their movement with the sound they are creating as music. These resources will be integrated into art instruction when learning about patterns, repetition, mood, and motion. They will learn how different codes, colors, and lighting effects of the Dash robots will influence the outcome of their artistic creation. Students will work together to problem solve as they try new approaches to achieve their end goal. With this project, students will be able to create art in a new way, and become more evaluative when critiquing styles of music coupled with motion as they demonstrate a new way of expressing themselves.

Using the Dash robot, students will begin to look at art differently.

They will focus on the process of creating movement that goes with sounds and music, rather than just the finished piece. They will develop a love of art in a way that they are currently missing. Students will be able to analyze and collaborate with one another as they use coding to create artwork to show at a school Art Walk through this proposal. This will be a creative approach to art that they have never had a chance to receive.
