Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

We are located in a high-needs area of California, where most of our students receive free or reduced lunch. Our students face many challenges that affect their learning, such as gang violence and homelessness. To add to the challenges, my first graders are affected by the digital divide and are at a disadvantage when it comes to technology. Despite all these odds, my students are enthusiastic and eager to learn.

"Everybody in this country should learn how to program a computer because it teaches you how to think." -Steve Jobs.

As the Math and Science teacher, I team teach 48 curious minds. I am committed to closing the technological gap for my first graders by providing them exposure and opportunities to engage with technology. Through Dash & Dot robots, my students will have access to innovative technology and this experience will help them be better prepared for our digital world, which is rapidly changing.

My Project

With Dash & Dot, my first grade students will be able to learn the language of code. Using an iPad Air, students are able to communicate with Dash & Dot robots to make them do a variety of activities such as navigate through mazes, write and draw, dance, play music or make them do anything that their little minds can come up with! The idea is to teach my students how to code through play, helping both increase their understanding and interest in technology. We have already began exploring coding through code.org, and my students are loving it! Now, with Dash & Dot my students can take what they have learned and see it in action.

My goal is to work towards closing the digital divide by providing my students access to technology.

It is my hope that exposure to this technology will inspire them to do great things and will encourage them to want to seek a STEM career. These robots will provide my students the opportunity to learn real-world skills like collaboration, teamwork, and communication as they code together. But most importantly, my students will have so much fun learning and being creative as they explore this innovative technology. I'm sure the impacts of Dash & Dot will be long felt and life changing for my first graders.
