Dash Brings Coding Alive for 5th Graders

My students need the dash robot to learn about computer programming and robotics. The robot will provide an opportunity for my students to learn how math, logic, science, and technology integrate to solve real world problems.

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

A snapshot in my classroom includes using the projector to show a clip of chemical reactions, students competing to answer questions for a states and capitals game, projecting math notes on the board, and using my best character voices while doing the afternoon read aloud.

My 5th-grade students ask critical questions and make curious predictions based on the characters actions/choices.

They discuss with one another the cause and consequences of historical events, and they try to analyze the theme and the author's motivation in writing the story or information. Our district is large, but our students and teachers are unique, creative, hardworking, and proud. More than 85% of our students qualify for free lunch, but the knowledge the students gain at our unique elementary school helps them dream big and learn to have high aspirations for their future.

My Project

Dash is a robot that can be programmed using basic coding language. Steve Jobs once said "Everybody in this country should learn how to program a computer, because it teaches you how to think." This project will provide an unparalleled opportunity for my students to learn how to think. This project takes what we learn in math (geometry: angles, degrees), science (the scientific method), and reading (critical thinking).

By having an accessible and tangible robot that can act out programmable code, my students will foster their interest in technology and endurance in problem solving.

This robot helps support our emphasis on science, technology, engineering, and math, but more importantly, it will engage all of my students in challenging themselves with problems that are not easily solvable. The Dash robot will provide opportunities for my students of various ELD levels to communicate with one another and practice collaboration with one another.
