Dash and Dot Robots to the Rescue

My students need a Wonder Workshop Dash robot, a Launcher for Dash robot, Accessories Pack for robots, Build Brick Extensions for robots along with six scoop chairs.

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

"Learning to write programs stretches your mind, and helps you think better, creates a way of thinking about things that I think is helpful in all domains," Bill Gates said and I agree. Coding is very important and our students need to learn these skills through robotics to apply them in the future.

My students are a wonderful bunch that is eager to learn and put forth great effort in class with the materials we currently have.

I work with a large culturally and linguistically diverse group of learners, which include primary grade levels. I work with students who have autism, students with specific learning disabilities, and speech-language impairments. My students attend an elementary school where close to 70% of our students are English Language Learners and 90% of our students receive free or reduced lunch.

My Project

My students will use Dash/Dot to learn to code as they play with their new robotic friends. They will learn to use a tablet to access free Wonder Workshop apps that control Dash/Dot. The robots interact with the world using sensors & they can hear sounds, detect objects, & know if students are moving them. They will learn how to program Dash/Dot to deliver a message to a friend, have a dance party, & even navigate through an obstacle course. The Launcher is a fun accessory that turns the Dash robot into a projectile hurling machine which can load, launch, reload, & launch again. They will use the apps to vary the power on the launcher to try to aim for different targets. They will give Dash/Dot new abilities & expand their imagination using snap-on accessories & transform Dash into a cleaning machine with the bulldozer bar. They will use LEGO bricks to build Dash/Dot into anything they imagine with the Building Brick extensions. They will use the scoop chairs to sit down as they code.

By providing students with opportunities to code through the use of robotics, they will be more likely to take computer classes in the future.

It is my hope that we can make a small difference in my students lives, that will eventually lead them to ideas and innovations that will make big changes in their future.
