ESL 5th graders in a high-need Texas city need dictionaries!
These elementary students are hard working and want to learn as many new English words as they can before they go to middle school. I don't even teach Reading and yet my students constantly find themselves grappling for a dictionary that isn't there to look something up. Most of my students live in trailers behind the school and own very few books of their own, let alone a dictionary. Just to have a few new dictionaries at our disposal in the classroom would make a world of a difference!
My students are eager to expand their vocabulary and get really excited about our daily Word of the Day warm up each morning. The problem is, I am their walking, talking dictionary. The only dictionaries available in our elementary school are young children's dictionaries printed in the 1940s. My students are 5th graders and often can't find the words they are looking for in these "baby" books.
My students need grade and age appropriate dictionaries. These would be a classroom set, not one book for every student.
My students will be moving on to middle school next year and need to know how to look words up in a "real" dictionary. They also deserve books that have been printed within their lifetime and contain current information( their old books still list the USSR and don't recognize Alaska as its own state!) Your help will ensure that my students stay excited about learning new words and looking up ones they aren't familiar with. Your help will ensure that my students move on to middle school with the necessary skills to use a dictionary that is not based just on pictures and a first grade vocabulary.
