My Students
My school is a Title I school, with over 45% of the population receiving free or reduced price lunch. Last year in particular, our area has been severely hit by hurricane Harvey and it is still recovering from the aftermath of this disaster. Resilience is the word that can better describe the young people in my class.
They love challenges and take part in every project I offer them, whether to volunteer and help others, tutoring their peers, or being involved in the Italian Community in our city.
They work hard, are highly motivated (I step in when they are not!) and deserve to have access to the best learning opportunities.
My Project
In schools we are using technology to be able to bring to the classroom the world, Italy in my case. I have created multiple resources for my students to work online. Something is missing, though, and I think I need to take a new direction to help all the students taking Italian: makerspaces are being created in every school as keeping yourself busy doing something manual helps your concentration, makes you focus, and it also helps to de-stress. Creating projects as lapbooks will be useful in all my classes, from level 2 to level 5 and students will be able to materialize their ideas in Italian, and therefore will learn better.
We need stickers, markers, colored pencils, scissors, staplers, stickers, file folders, staples, glitter, copy paper, highlighters, a pencil sharpener, tape, post-it notes and a cart to hold all materials to make lapbooks in Italian.
With these resources my classroom will become a physical space where to bring to life manual projects with what my students learn using technology.
Lapbooks are a creative way to organize a unit's contents and structures by creating a project with materials that by the use of color and the students manual skills will help visual learners and all those who learn by being creative have an easier approach to learning Italian. Project based instruction has proven to help students learn by allowing them to focus on the many possibilities of concretely applying what they are studying. Having a variety of materials available will sparkle the curiosity and creativity from the beginning to the advanced level in my classes.
