My students need two complete DVD curriculum sets to help teach them Character Education skills and traits, as well as activities, worksheets, and books to reinforce these newly learned skills and strategies!
The students of Roosevelt Island, New York are extremely unique! The young boys and girls come from all over the world to attend our school! We are represented by nations such as Pakistan, Sudan, Italy, Spain, Brazil, South Korea, Japan and many, many more! With that in mind, you can imagine the various languages, cultural differences and diversity that is housed inside one school and one community.
My job this year is to bridge the gaps and create a community that supports one another and leans on each other day in and day out.
These students must learn to understand each other and celebrate their differences. We want them to see themselves as unique and special but also part of one big, supportive family.
Our school is also very special because we begin to welcome students in Pre-K and continue our education process through the eighth grade. Some students spend their school years here with us from ages 4 to 13!
My Project
My students need to learn the life skills necessary to become college and career ready as well as role models in our often challenging society. Students are equipped with content knowledge from schools day in and day out. What are they often missing? Life skills such as respect, responsibility, perseverence, empathy, kindness and citizenship.
This Donors Choose project will allow me to begin teaching my students how to possess these essential life skills that will allow them not only to succeed in life but to be respectful, caring and resilient young adults.
So often, schools focus on academics and forget about teaching their students how to be a good person.
The two DVD curriculum sets will allow me to teach to a large number of students in an auditorium setting and give concrete examples and scenarios of how to be a great person! The activities, books, DVD's and worksheets will then allow me to reinforce these newly acquired skills as a whole group and then for the classroom teachers to further use in their classrooms. In order for children to succeed we need to teach them and show them how!
