My Students

My 9th grade Honors English I students are intellectually curious, compassionate, and mature beyond their years. They travel from all 50 wards of the city to attend our 8am-5pm public arts high school, located in Chicago. The student body is rich in its diversity, with students representing various socioeconomic backgrounds, lived experiences and cultural & ethnic groups. As Scholar-Artists, each of these freshmen specializes in a chosen art form. Our students are actors, dancers, visual artists, instrumentalists, vocalists, and creative writers.

I want the literature my 9th graders encounter to be culturally responsive, socially relevant and intellectually rigorous.

Students are most engaged when they relate to a text and can see diversity in their literature, both in content and form. My goal is to assist my students in accessing a wide range of voices in literature, across different genres.

My Project

Our year-long focus in Honors English I is the Danger of Literature. Throughout the year, we will explore how writers use stories to expose oppressive systems and challenge social realities.

Our literature unit, "Dangerous Stories, Dangerous Identities," asks students to explore how literature can pose a danger to those in power, and the inherent power of giving voice to people that have been historically marginalized and disenfranchised.

Freshmen students in Honors English I will have the opportunity to read "Maus I," by Art Spiegelman, a graphic novel recounting the lived experiences of Jewish people during WWII and the Holocaust, and the trauma that follows the survivors throughout their lives.

Last year, a select group of students in my classes chose to read "Maus I," and expressed how much they enjoyed it. We are in need of 2 class sets of this novel.

This graphic novel, along with Chimamanda Adichie's "The Danger of a Single Story" speech, help frame the unit around the following Essential Questions:

• What is the danger of a single story?

• How can single stories influence you to accept injustice?

• To what extent are we all witnesses of difficult history and messengers to humanity?

• Who is an insider? Who is an outsider? Who decides this and why?

In addition, this unit will also incorporate supplemental teaching materials from Facing History and Ourselves (FHAO). Specifically, we will read selections from "Salvaged Pages," a collection of diary entries written by young people who lived in Europe during the Holocaust. Some of the writers were refugees, others were hiding or passing as non-Jews, some were imprisoned in ghettos, and, tragically, nearly everyone of them perished. But their words and stories are preserved and need to be read.
